A new automated system has been introduced by Pošta Srbije in collaboration with the Customs Administration of the Republic of Serbia to enhance the customs clearance speed for international postal packages arriving in Serbia. This initiative, which commenced on February 23, 2026, replaces traditional manual procedures with an electronic pre-arrival processing system.
With the updated process, shipment information will be sent electronically to customs authorities prior to the physical arrival of parcels at customs terminals. This advance transmission allows customs clearance to start as soon as the data is received, significantly minimizing delays associated with handling and delivery. The reform aims to ensure consistent application of Serbian import regulations across all postal items containing goods from abroad.
Zoran Anđelković, Acting Director of Pošta Srbije, indicated that the new system will prevent postal items from being held up at customs while awaiting manual processing. This change is anticipated to reduce transit times for parcels. Anđelković highlighted that the revamped approach integrates robotics, specialized PAP software, and automated electronic notifications to expedite the sorting and delivery of packages to recipients.
The initiative builds upon modernization efforts initiated last year aimed at enhancing the sorting and handling processes for goods, transitioning towards more efficient logistics operations supported by digital technology. This includes upgrading systems that facilitate customs checks and risk assessments based on data received before a parcel’s physical arrival, rather than post-arrival.
The development of this automated clearance system was supported by experts from both Pošta Srbije and the Customs Administration, as part of a broader trade facilitation program implemented with international cooperation. Analysts anticipate that this new process will lead to shorter delivery times for imports, alleviate congestion at customs facilities, and enhance predictability for consumers and businesses engaged in international e-commerce transactions.
