Serbia’s mining sector recorded strong export growth, with metal ore exports increasing 31.7% to €1.62 billion during the first eight months of 2026, outperforming the country’s broader merchandise trade and industrial production trends.
Metal ore shipments accounted for the overwhelming majority of €1.68 billion in total mining and quarrying exports. Overall mining exports increased 33.1%, compared with 8.8% growth in Serbia’s total merchandise exports over the same period.
Metal Ore Mining Production Records Annual Growth
Production figures also showed an expansion in the sector. Metal ore mining output increased 13.3% year-on-year in August, while cumulative production growth for January–August reached 3.7%. The difference between export value growth and physical production growth reflects the influence of commodity prices, product composition, processing levels and shipment schedules. Export statistics alone do not establish how much of the revenue increase resulted from higher volumes or stronger realised prices.
Mining Exports Support Related Industrial Activities
The increase in mining export revenues strengthens the potential for investment in mineral processing, logistics, power infrastructure and related industrial services. Higher revenues may also improve the financial position of operating mines, depending on their cost structures and outstanding obligations.
Stronger ore exports do not necessarily translate into broader industrial development. The extent to which Serbia benefits from mining growth also depends on opportunities to retain more mineral value domestically through refining, manufacturing and supply-chain integration. The balance between primary mineral shipments and higher-value domestic processing remains central to the sector’s contribution to Serbia’s industrial economy.
