Biljana Komnenić, Acting Director of Elektrodistribucija Srbije (EDS), announced that the company will continue replacing electricity meters, aiming to have a total of 960,000 smart meters installed by the end of 2026. Niš will become the first Serbian city fully covered with smart meters.
From October 2025, 200,000 meters will be replaced in Čačak, Kraljevo, and Niš, funded by a €40 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and an €8 million EU grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). Niš alone will see 140,000 meters replaced. The project is expected to be completed within nine months.
Smart meters are designed to reduce distribution losses and allow consumers to monitor and manage their electricity consumption in real time. EDS aims to have 80% of meters on the network replaced with smart meters by the end of the decade.
Dejan Popović, President of the Serbian Energy Agency Council, emphasized that automation and digitalization are essential to maintain electricity quality as more decentralized and solar energy sources connect to the grid.
EU representative Gligo Vuković highlighted that previous EU funding prioritized production and transmission, while distribution was neglected. The new projects aim to strengthen consumer empowerment and energy efficiency through real-time data provided by smart meters.
