Serbia is set to join the Single Euro Payment Area (SEPA) on May 22, according to the governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS), Jorgovanka Tabaković. Although Serbia has not yet officially joined SEPA, Tabaković emphasized that the country has fulfilled all necessary conditions and has adopted the required laws for membership. She pointed out that the European Commission has no objections, and Serbia’s membership is expected to be confirmed at the upcoming European Payments Council meeting.
Tabaković explained that Serbia is ready to join SEPA, which aims to facilitate cheaper euro payments across Europe, similar to domestic payments in dinars. The initiative, launched in 2008, is designed to simplify, speed up, and standardize electronic payments while minimizing costs.
For any country to join SEPA, it must meet the European Union’s legal and technical regulations related to payment systems. National banks play a key role in submitting the SEPA membership application on behalf of their countries.
