Dušan Bajatović, director of “Srbijagas”, announced that Serbia has essentially agreed with Russia on purchasing 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, up from the previous 2 billion. He mentioned that discussions on the specifics of the new gas contract are ongoing, with a ten-year agreement expected to be signed.
The existing contract with Russia expires in May, and issues such as mutual risks and flexibility are being discussed. Bajatović highlighted that Serbia’s gas consumption on cold days has reached 18 million cubic meters per day, raising concerns about transport capacity. He also noted that countries like Hungary and Slovakia are increasing their gas imports in the coming years, requiring cooperation.
Regarding the ten-year contract, Bajatović acknowledged that while it is feasible, uncertainties around Europe’s plan to ban Russian gas by 2027 remain a concern. The potential for “force majeure” clauses in the contract, should delivery issues arise, is also being discussed to prevent penalties.
Currently, Serbia’s gas storage in Banatski Dvor is 76% full, with ongoing technical operations affecting one million cubic meters. Bajatović confirmed the formal expansion of the Banatski Dvor facility, with the first well already drilled.
