Serbian Minister of Agriculture and Trade Dusan Petrovic said Monday that prices of basic foodstuffs in Serbia followed the trends in world commodity markets.
In the event of any significant changes in food prices in world and domestic markets, the government will have a set of instruments prepared, the minister told reporters in Sjenica, a town in southwestern Serbia.
The Minister recalled the government’s adoption of a set of measures to stabilize the domestic basic foods market such as setting limits for bread prices and interventing by making sugar from commodity reserves available for market.
Preparations are underway of a budget revision that would envisage a guarantee instrument to open the possibility for the commodity reserves to be used for significant market interventions. Petrovic said no strategic food was currently scarce in the country.
