Preparations for Expo 2027 Belgrade, scheduled to take place from 15 May to 15 August 2027, have moved into a phase where project delivery, cost control and implementation timelines are becoming central priorities.
The exhibition site and related infrastructure investments have been estimated at approximately €1.29 billion, covering the construction of pavilions, utility systems, an aquatic centre, road infrastructure and the railway connection linking Zemun, Nikola Tesla Airport and the Expo complex.
Surčin Development Programme Expands Beyond Expo Site
The broader Surčin programme includes additional major assets such as the National Stadium and the Expo Village, extending the scope of development beyond the three-month international exhibition.
These projects are expected to influence the transport network and urban development profile of western Belgrade after Expo 2027. Their long-term economic value will depend on the ability to establish sustainable post-event uses for the completed facilities rather than relying solely on activity generated during the exhibition period.
Construction Timeline Raises Focus on Oversight and Cost Management
With construction schedules becoming increasingly demanding, potential delays, design changes or procurement-related disputes could significantly affect overall project costs.
Recent infrastructure-related controversies in Serbia have increased the importance of independent supervision and transparent certification processes. These factors are particularly relevant for international contractors and financial institutions involved in major public infrastructure projects.
Expo Investment Brings Economic Activity Alongside Fiscal Risks
Expo-related expenditure is expected to contribute to construction activity, hospitality services and domestic demand through 2027. At the same time, concentrating large-scale investment commitments within a limited timeframe increases fiscal and execution risks, placing greater emphasis on managing costs and ensuring effective use of completed assets after the event.
