Masdar and Taaleri Energia have commissioned the 154 MW Čibuk 2 wind farm near Kovin, expanding the country’s largest operational wind-power complex and the largest such hub in the Western Balkans. The facility comprises 22 Nordex turbines and is expected to produce up to 336 GWh of electricity annually. Its output is equivalent to the estimated electricity consumption of approximately 80,000 households and is expected to avoid more than 311,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Čibuk 2 adds 154 MW to existing wind capacity
Čibuk 2 is jointly owned by Abu Dhabi-based Masdar and Finland’s Taaleri Energia. The project was developed in cooperation with New Energy Solutions and employed more than 1,000 people during construction, including workers, subcontractors and project-management personnel. The new wind farm operates alongside the 158 MW Čibuk 1, bringing the combined installed capacity of the two facilities to 312 MW. Together, the projects can provide electricity equivalent to the consumption of approximately 178,800 households.
Total foreign investment in the two Čibuk developments exceeds €500 million.
Masdar maintains additional Serbian renewable pipeline
Masdar has a further Serbian renewable-energy pipeline exceeding 200 MW, comprising wind, solar and battery-storage projects. The company’s existing assets provide a platform for additional development in Serbia and across Central and Eastern Europe. Serbia plans to connect approximately 3.5 GW of new wind and solar capacity by 2030 and raise renewables’ share of electricity generation to 45%.
Renewable expansion requires grid investment
Achieving those targets will require investment in transmission infrastructure, balancing capacity and energy storage. Wind projects have higher capacity factors and production patterns that differ from solar generation, providing a different seasonal and system profile. Their further development will depend on grid availability, transparent connection procedures and investment in Serbia’s transmission network.
