The Serbian battery manufacturer Black Horse has resumed operations at its facility in Sombor, marking a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to revitalize its industrial presence. The restart of production for traction batteries comes after a challenging period that halted manufacturing activities, underscoring the importance of domestic battery production capacity in Serbia.
During a recent ceremony at the factory, company executives announced the recommencement of manufacturing alongside plans for future growth in both production capabilities and workforce size. Current employment stands at 45 workers, with expectations to increase to 60 within the next month as operations ramp up. Additional hiring is anticipated in 2026, reflecting a strategic approach to rebuilding industrial capacity and market engagement.
The focus of this production restart is on traction batteries, which are primarily utilized in industrial vehicles and logistics equipment. Black Horse plans to manufacture these batteries in capacities ranging from 60 to 155 ampere-hours, aiming for a competitive balance between cost and performance. The product line is set to cater to both domestic clients and export markets, addressing the needs of sectors reliant on industrial battery solutions for equipment such as forklifts and warehouse systems.
Management highlighted that the relaunch is part of a comprehensive investment strategy aimed at modernizing the plant. Ongoing investments will enhance technological capabilities and align manufacturing processes with environmental standards. Aleksandar Čolić, director of Black Horse, emphasized that this initiative marks a commitment to long-term development while preserving industrial expertise and incorporating advanced manufacturing techniques.
A crucial aspect of the renewed production strategy involves implementing stringent quality control measures. Genadi Isaev, director of research, development, and quality control at Black Horse, noted that producing traction batteries requires high technical precision and thorough monitoring throughout the manufacturing process. The company has established quality assurance systems designed to ensure product reliability and performance, blending traditional manufacturing skills with modern engineering practices.
The new production line is engineered to meet elevated technical standards, enabling the factory to produce robust battery systems suited for demanding industrial applications. Representatives from Black Horse have stated that modernization efforts aim to enhance product reliability while ensuring compliance with contemporary industry benchmarks.
The event celebrating the resumption of production attracted local government officials, including Sombor’s mayor and representatives from the West Bačka District, along with members of the business community. Their attendance highlighted the significance of revitalizing this historic industrial employer within the local economy.
Black Horse boasts a rich industrial legacy dating back several decades, having been the sole domestic manufacturer of automotive batteries in Serbia. Historically recognized as a major producer in the former Yugoslavia, the company’s revival signifies not only corporate recovery but also an effort to restore part of Serbia’s manufacturing heritage.
Support for this revival has come through investments aimed at modernizing production facilities and increasing operational efficiency. Previous announcements indicated an investment of approximately €3 million dedicated to upgrading machinery and production systems to foster sustainable manufacturing practices. This funding is intended to facilitate the introduction of modern technologies while preparing the facility for future product expansions.
Looking forward, Black Horse intends to broaden its product offerings beyond traction batteries. Management has indicated plans for introducing starter batteries by around 2027, contingent on completing plant modernization and technology installations. The goal is to re-establish Black Horse as a leading regional battery supplier capable of servicing both industrial and automotive sectors.
The reopening of the Sombor facility represents a broader initiative towards industrial revitalization.
