An Australian mining company has initiated a new phase of gold exploration in western Serbia, marking a significant step forward in the country’s relatively unexplored polymetallic region. Middle Island Resources has commenced a drilling campaign at the Bobija project, located near Ljubovija, with the aim of confirming previously identified mineralization zones.
The current drilling program consists of 17 reverse circulation (RC) drill holes, with a planned total depth of up to 1,500 meters. This initiative is strategically focused on areas surrounding an historic barite mine. The latest exploration efforts build upon earlier findings that indicated a substantial polymetallic system containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. Historical sampling from the site has reported gold grades reaching up to 5.24 grams per ton (g/t) and silver grades between 89 to 120 g/t. Notably, continuous mineralized intervals have been identified, including one instance of 46 meters averaging approximately 1.07 g/t gold and 91.5 g/t silver, suggesting strong geological continuity.
In addition to drilling activities, Middle Island Resources is expanding its geochemical survey across nearby targets such as Tisovik, Crvene Stene, and Kozila. Previous fieldwork in these areas has highlighted multi-kilometer anomalies particularly abundant in lead and zinc, emphasizing the extensive nature of the mineral system.
The Bobija project is part of a larger portfolio acquired by Middle Island Resources last year when it secured 14 exploration licenses covering about 62,000 hectares through its takeover of Konstantin Resources. Within this portfolio, Bobija—spanning roughly 20,800 hectares—has been prioritized for initial development efforts.
This renewed exploration activity reflects Serbia’s emerging status as a frontier zone for mining in Southeast Europe, particularly for polymetallic deposits. The combination of historical mining operations, limited modern exploration activities, and favorable geological conditions continues to draw interest from foreign junior miners looking for scalable discoveries.
Moreover, recent developments within the country—including additional projects led by Australian companies near Priboj and Raška—indicate a growing concentration of early-stage exploration investments. Multiple operators are currently focusing on epithermal and replacement-style gold systems that could facilitate future resource definition and potentially lead to mine development pipelines.
