All planned and projected works on the Zemun Polje–National Stadium railway will be completed by the agreed deadline, by the end of 2026, said Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijević during a visit to the construction site. The railway is part of the linear infrastructure for the EXPO 2027 project.
According to the minister, construction is progressing excellently.
“We’ve reviewed all the necessary documentation required for a project of this scale. The section from Zemun Polje to Belgrade Airport and further to the National Stadium is 18.3 kilometers long and will include six complex engineering structures—four bridges, a viaduct, and an overpass. Everything we’ve seen assures us that we will complete all planned work on time,” Sofronijević stated.
The railway will have two tracks and will be fully electrified with state-of-the-art equipment. It is designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and will be used exclusively for passenger transport, the minister added. She emphasized that the Serbian Government and her ministry are insisting on the application of the highest standards for this project.
The main contractor is the Chinese company Power China.
“We have all the necessary permits, we’re applying all required standards, and we’re paying special attention to safety and security—both during the construction and once the railway is operational,” Sofronijević assured.
She also noted that with this project, Belgrade will join the ranks of major global cities that offer safe and efficient rail transport from the airport to the city center.
“In our case, that journey will take just 15 minutes. I’m confident that this will eliminate all the problems we’ve faced at the airport—unauthorized taxi drivers and other issues that made travel inconvenient—allowing passengers to reach Belgrade quickly and safely at a fixed, secure price,” Sofronijević concluded.
