Japanese tyre manufacturer Toyo Tire Serbia is set to commence construction of a new research and development (R&D) centre on March 19 in Inđija. This initiative represents a significant step in the company’s expansion efforts within Serbia, aligning with the country’s growing automotive manufacturing sector.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony will be attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, along with representatives from Toyo Tire, including Satoru Mori, and officials from the Japanese Embassy in Serbia. This event underscores the strategic significance of Toyo Tire’s investment in enhancing economic ties between Japan and Serbia, as well as contributing to the latter’s industrial growth.
The R&D facility will be integrated into the existing industrial complex where Toyo Tire has been operating a tyre production plant since 2022. Currently, this facility employs approximately 630 workers and produces around five million tyres annually for export markets.
As part of its strategic reorganization, Toyo Tire plans to relocate its European research operations from Germany to Serbia, positioning the Inđija site as its primary R&D hub in Europe. The centre is expected to begin operations around 2027.
The new laboratory will concentrate on developing innovative rubber materials, tyre compounds, and advanced manufacturing technologies aimed at enhancing performance, safety, and energy efficiency. Additionally, engineers will focus on refining processing technologies and testing methods to expedite development cycles and facilitate the commercialization of new products.
By consolidating research, production, and management functions within a single industrial cluster, Toyo Tire seeks to foster collaboration among its technology centres located in Japan, the United States, and Europe. This integrated approach is anticipated to enhance product development efficiency and bolster the company’s competitive edge in the global tyre market.
This investment also highlights Serbia’s increasing role as a manufacturing hub for international automotive suppliers. With an initial investment of approximately €380 million for its first European tyre factory in Inđija, Toyo Tire has established one of its largest industrial projects in Europe and one of the most significant Japanese investments in Serbia.
Once operational, the R&D centre will enable the Inđija complex to unify production, research, and regional management functions at one location. Such developments are crucial for Serbia’s industrial policy as they elevate the country’s status in global supply chains beyond mere assembly and production towards technology development and engineering capabilities.
The establishment of this research centre signifies a deeper integration of Serbia’s manufacturing ecosystem with global automotive technology networks. By combining advanced production with research activities, the Inđija complex is poised to reinforce Serbia’s position as a vital industrial hub within Toyo Tire’s European strategy and across the broader automotive supply chain in Southeast Europe.
