Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy Radoš Popadić announced at the international conference “Power Plants 2025” that Serbia is forming an inter-ministerial working group and a special department within the ministry dedicated to developing the country’s nuclear energy program.
Following amendments to the Energy Law in 2024, the previous law banning the construction of nuclear power plants was repealed, allowing Serbia to begin exploring the use of nuclear energy.
Popadić explained that Serbia is currently in the first phase of its peaceful nuclear energy development program, which will last two years. This phase focuses on establishing a legal and regulatory framework, ensuring nuclear safety and security, training personnel, informing the public, selecting nuclear technologies, building infrastructure, grid connection, and managing spent fuel and nuclear waste.
The newly formed bodies will provide technical support in analyzing key issues, designing organizational structures, and identifying experts for program implementation.
Popadić emphasized the importance of cooperation with leading global institutions in nuclear technology and energy generation, as well as coordination with Serbian scientific and regulatory institutions.
This cooperation will include knowledge exchange, improving the regulatory framework, developing human resources, organizing workshops and study visits, establishing educational and research centers, and assessing Serbia’s potential for developing a peaceful nuclear energy program. Public awareness and understanding of the nuclear initiative will also be a key part of the process.
