Ivan Janković, Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, stated that the Radljevo surface coal mine in the Kolubara Mining Basin is a strategic project for the country’s energy sector. He emphasized that fully opening the mine is essential for stable and long-term coal supply to thermal power plants.
Investments totaling €180 million are being made to install two new mining systems (Bagger-Transporter-Stacker or BTO) at the Radljevo mine. These systems will enable additional overburden removal of 16 to 19 million cubic meters annually starting next year, a crucial step for coal extraction.
Janković confirmed that the Ministry will continue supporting the project to ensure all works are completed according to the plans set by Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and contractors.
EPS General Director Dušan Živković highlighted the importance of meeting deadlines and maintaining the agreed schedule. He noted that coal production in the first half of this year rose by 7% compared to the same period last year, demonstrating that investments in modernization and renewal of mining equipment are yielding results.
Significant investments in core mining equipment reflect the commitment of the Serbian government and EPS to secure energy independence through strengthening the thermal and mining sectors.
Currently, one of the largest mining equipment installations is underway, involving four production systems simultaneously. Alongside the Radljevo mine, preparations are also being made to install new mining equipment at the “Polje E” site to further increase overburden removal and boost coal production there.
