Following the government’s decision on next year’s minimum wage, the Center for Emancipation Policies (CPE) calculated a “living wage” based on 2024 inflation.
Next year’s minimum wage will be 64,554 dinars, while the CPE estimates that a wage sufficient to cover basic social and existential needs for workers and their families is 150,670 dinars.
Currently, the average minimum wage of 54,200 dinars covers only 36% of what is needed for a decent standard of living.
CPE emphasizes that while increases in the minimum wage are positive, the minimum wage should guarantee that workers are not at risk of poverty—which is not yet the case. They call for policies ensuring dignified wages that allow people to live, not just survive.
The living wage calculation was based on research by the international Clean Clothes Campaign, which unites organizations and unions advocating for better labor conditions in the textile industry.
