Chinese tech giant Huawei is looking to expand its operations in Serbia, moving beyond its long-standing involvement in digitalization and eGovernment systems into new areas such as semiconductor and electronic component production and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut discussed these possibilities during a meeting with Huawei representatives in Shanghai, where they explored ways to further structure and deepen the company’s business presence in Serbia.
Macut also met with representatives of BGI Group and Sinopharm, two major Chinese companies interested in enhancing cooperation with Serbia in the fields of medicine, pharmaceuticals, high technology, and communications.
He highlighted that BGI Group, known for its work in clinical genetics and diagnostics, is interested in applying its advanced medical technologies in Serbia, particularly in developmental and applied medicine. The company previously contributed during the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing Serbia’s “Fire Eye” laboratories for virus genome sequencing and diagnostics.
According to Macut, future cooperation aims to strengthen bioinformatics in Serbia — improving data analysis capabilities in genetics, oncology, and clinical medicine through BGI’s technological expertise.
In discussions with Sinopharm, the focus was on advancing collaboration in therapeutic production lines and expanding Serbia’s access to modern pharmaceutical solutions developed in China.
