Nikola Jovanović, director of the Center for Local Self-Government, thanked the leadership of the state company EXPO 2027 for responding to public inquiries and providing facts of public interest. He emphasized that dialogue and transparency are essential, especially for a state project worth several billion euros.
Jovanović highlighted that EXPO 2027 confirmed the Center’s concerns that the Surčin site—where pavilions, a stadium, and residential and business units will be built—will not have a dedicated wastewater treatment facility. Only primary sewage infrastructure will be constructed, connected to the city system, with wastewater discharged into rivers flowing through Belgrade.
He criticized this omission as a major oversight, stating that despite the multi-billion-euro budget, no wastewater treatment was planned, posing risks to water sources in the Surčin area. Jovanović publicly questioned who is responsible for not including wastewater treatment in the €2.5 billion budget, noting it would cost at most 0.5 percent of the total.
