A new facility dedicated to the production of technical monoammonium phosphate (tMAP 12-61) has commenced operations at Elixir Group’s Industrial ChemPark Prahovo in Serbia. The plant has already begun dispatching shipments to various customers across Europe, marking a significant step towards enhancing the availability of this essential fertilizer component within European markets.
This facility is poised to improve supply security for technical monoammonium phosphate, which is vital in contemporary agricultural practices. By producing this fertilizer locally, the plant aims to decrease delivery times and lessen reliance on imports across Europe.
The establishment of this production site stems from a strategic alliance between Elixir Group, based in Serbia, and Germany’s K+S Group. This partnership combines Elixir’s industrial capabilities with K+S’s extensive international distribution network. Under this collaboration, Elixir Group has developed the production plant alongside necessary storage facilities, while K+S is responsible for distributing the fertilizer primarily throughout Europe, Eastern Europe, and India. This initiative marks K+S’s first industrial collaboration with a partner in this region of Europe.
The Prahovo facility is distinguished by its incorporation of modern energy-efficient production technologies, making it one of the most advanced installations of its kind in Europe. This development aligns with broader industry trends focusing on efficiency, specialty products, and sustainable production processes amid challenges such as climate change, soil degradation, and increasing global food demand.
The new plant will manufacture soluMAP, a fully water-soluble tMAP fertilizer that contains 12% nitrogen and 61% P₂O₅. This product is tailored for fertigation and foliar application, catering specifically to high-value fruit and vegetable farming. Fertigation systems facilitate direct nutrient delivery through irrigation, allowing for improved nutrient absorption by crops and enhancing both yield and quality.
There has been a notable surge in demand for crystalline fertilizers like tMAP as agriculture increasingly adopts precision irrigation technologies and intensive horticultural practices. Additionally, these fertilizers are gaining traction beyond agriculture as specialty raw materials in various industrial applications.
For Elixir Group, the new facility significantly enhances its presence in the European fertilizer market. The Prahovo complex positions Serbia among the continent’s producers of advanced crystalline fertilizers, bolstering its role within the regional agro-industrial supply chain.
The successful launch of this production facility reflects a collaborative effort among engineering, technical, and operational teams from both Elixir Group and K+S. The project was overseen by Nemanja Tošković, who led the transition from construction to operational production.
With initial deliveries already underway, the Prahovo plant is set to become a key supplier of high-quality crystalline fertilizers for European agriculture, contributing to more efficient crop production and reinforcing the resilience of regional fertilizer supplies.
