If Serbia doesn’t change the Genetic Modified Food Law, not only it won’t enter STO but also this will be the obstacle to bilateral relations between Serbia and America. Victoria Niabarger from American Embassy in Belgrade claims that reason for higher prices of cattle food and meat is because GMO isn’t being imported in our country.
Our experts disagree about stopping or letting GMO research on Serbian fields.
Ministry of Commerce appeals to let GMO traffic and to limit import afterward.
“None of us is asking for GMO import, but we cannot forbid it so that we enter STO”, says Deputy Minister of Commerce, Biljana Todorovic.
“Let’s recall traffic and import veto and then use reconstructive politics which won’t let everything pass, like Switzerland and Russia.”
Miladin Sevralic, Faculty of Agriculture Professor, answers that GMO is unsafe, and the fact that America don’t want to take responsibility for consequences for so cultivated food is proof of that.
“SAD also hasn’t signed additional protocol to damages compensation which they would guarantee with for its GMO. European Reconstruction and Development Bank gave 40 million dollars for GMO risks of American Company on Balkan trade, what shows how much it means to them to work on our market, at all costs”, explains Sevarlic.
Corn Institute “Zemun Polje” says that Serbia have extremely good conditions for natural food producing, which will be at great cost soon.
“We have enough possibilities to use domestic potential because organic food price will grow continuously. Serbia certainly won’t be a concurrent to countries who already have been buying GMO”, says Zivota Jovanovic from Institute.
