In Serbia in 2022, there were 108,316 businesses, of which 105,947 or 97.8 percent were privately owned, as reported today by the Republic Statistical Office. Among privately-owned enterprises, 2,914 had 50 percent or more foreign capital. There were 1,444 state-owned enterprises and 925 in other forms of ownership.
When categorized by activities, the majority of businesses were engaged in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles, accounting for 29 percent, followed by the manufacturing industry at 14.8 percent, professional, scientific, innovative, and technical activities at 13.7 percent, construction at 9.3 percent, and transportation and storage at 6.8 percent.
These businesses employed 1.288 million workers, with 1.099 workers in the private sector. The highest percentage of people worked in the manufacturing industry, accounting for 32.0 percent, followed by wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles at 19.0 percent, and transportation and storage at 7.9 percent.
