Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that the United States is expected to impose sanctions on the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), as he doubts that the Americans will accept a Russian offer to purchase part of their shares in the company.
“There’s nothing to be done. They will go ahead with the sanctions, and we will have to see what to do,” Vučić said during the inaugural ride on the Novi Sad–Subotica high-speed railway. He expressed hope that the issue could be resolved without nationalizing NIS.
“I hope that even without such measures we can reach some form of agreement, because nationalization would be outright expropriation,” he added. Vučić emphasized that the Russians will not allow anyone else to take over NIS.
“Let’s stop with all the fairy tales. There are a million friends in the world willing to help us and pay more than the real value for NIS, but the Russians won’t allow it,” he said.
The president also reassured that fuel supply will not be affected by the anticipated sanctions on NIS. “There won’t be any buying of fuel in cans,” he stated, adding that he is “too responsible a person to allow that” and that “everything will be under control.”
