The Moldovan government has decided to temporarily limit sugar imports from Serbia, aiming to protect domestic production and stabilize the market. The decision suspends customs exemptions for the import of white sugar from sugar beets from Serbia for quantities exceeding a quota of 1,000 tons and will be in effect for the next 200 days, according to the Moldpres agency.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Doina Nistor stated that the measure represents a “proportional and justified intervention.” She explained that it addresses imbalances caused by imports priced lower than domestic production.
“Without this protective measure, we would risk imports completely displacing domestic production and threatening the industrial value chain we have been building for two decades,” Nistor warned, adding that the decision will not affect sugar prices for consumers.
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean noted that the measure is implemented in accordance with bilateral trade agreements and that the Serbian side has been informed. “We are not restricting trade, but restoring market balance and protecting farmers and consumers while strengthening Moldova’s food security,” Recean emphasized.
