The Republic of Guinea-Bissau, located on the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa, has officially confirmed its participation in the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade. The exhibition, scheduled from May 15 to August 15, 2027, will carry the theme “Game(s) for Humanity.”
Guinea-Bissau, a member of the International Bureau of Exhibitions (BIE) since 2007, has been participating in international exhibitions since 1991. As one of the most diverse nations in Africa, Guinea-Bissau is home to several ethnic groups, including the Balanti, Fuleh, Manjak, Mandingo, Papeli, and Bizhagosh. The country’s official language is Creole, but each ethnic group speaks its own language, showcasing the nation’s rich cultural tapestry. Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal in 1974.
At EXPO 2027, the country will bring a taste of West African culture to Serbia, including musical genres like gumbe, tina, and kusunde, along with traditional instruments such as the kora, bombolum, drum, and balafon. Guinea-Bissau’s vibrant dances, performed at weddings, harvests, funerals, and initiation ceremonies, will also be part of its cultural showcase.
Known for its rich biodiversity, Guinea-Bissau’s Bižagoš Archipelago is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, further highlighting the country’s natural wonders. In addition to its ecological diversity, Guinea-Bissau is also a sports powerhouse, particularly in soccer, with famous players like Ansu Fati and Alejandro Balde from Barcelona, Beto from Everton, and Dalcio Gomes from Red Star Belgrade. The country has also excelled in martial arts, producing numerous champions in judo, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu.
Serbia-Guinea-Bissau relations
The historical ties between Serbia and Guinea-Bissau date back to the Yugoslav era, when Yugoslavia strongly supported Guinea-Bissau’s fight for independence from Portugal. Political relations were revived in 2017 with reciprocal visits from officials, and in the same year, Serbia declared May 25 as the Day of Friendship with African Peoples.
EXPO 2027 Belgrade offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm Serbia’s friendship with Guinea-Bissau and with Africa as a whole. Several African nations will be represented at the event, making it a pivotal moment for international collaboration and understanding.
“Serbia has always deeply respected Africa’s long-standing pursuit of freedom, as well as its rich cultural heritage, traditions, and customs. We are excited to see this incredible diversity showcased in Belgrade in two years. We are proud that the world will witness the beauty of Africa and Guinea-Bissau from Serbia’s capital,” said Dušan Borovčan, director of EXPO 2027 Belgrade.
Looking ahead
EXPO 2027 Belgrade will be the first specialized exhibition in the Western Balkans and is expected to attract over 4 million visitors. With more than 120 countries, international organizations, and companies participating, the 93-day exhibition promises to be a global event that highlights the cultural and historical diversity of its participants, including Guinea-Bissau.
