Dušan Bajatović, the General Director of Srbijagas, expressed optimism about the potential extension of the deadline for U.S. sanctions on NIS. He noted that predicting the exact length of the extension is difficult, whether it will be 45 or 90 days, but he expects a decision to be reached within the next five to twelve days.
Speaking on TV Prva, Bajatović outlined three possible solutions to the issue. The first would be an unconditional, temporary delay, allowing time for ongoing discussions and agreements with Russia. The second option would allow NIS to continue operations under specific conditions, while the third scenario would permit some level of activity within the Oil Industry of Serbia, potentially with stricter control, ensuring that oil refining and derivative production continue at the company’s facilities.
Bajatović emphasized the importance of NIS, stating that the company produces 80% of the oil derivatives sold in Serbia and 60% in retail. He also highlighted that NIS employs 12,000 people and contributes at least 2.5% to Serbia’s annual budget. Given these factors, he believes it is justified to seek an extension and reach an agreement with the authorities.
