Ten days after the Serbian government implemented a regulation to limit retail margins on 23 key product categories, large price discrepancies persist, raising concerns about compliance. Dejan Gavrilović, president of the consumer association “Efektiva,” highlighted examples such as milk priced at 100 dinars in one store and 150 dinars in another, and fabric softener costing 830 dinars at Maxi compared to 440 dinars at Univerexport.
President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed that at least one retail chain has not complied with the margin-limiting regulation and will face consequences. Meanwhile, Deleze and Lidl reportedly adhered to the rules, though Gavrilović questioned their compliance, suggesting stores may be finding ways to bypass the regulation.
The regulation, effective from September 1 for six months, caps retail margins at 20% for selected products, aiming to reduce consumer prices.
